Hong Kong is the most expensive square foot in the world.
And most of us sleep on a quarter of it. We did the math one evening in 2018, sitting in a 280 sqft Tai Kok Tsui flat that we'd just renovated for a client — a flat where her bed had eaten the only room she had to live in. "Why isn't there a real wall bed company in Hong Kong?" she asked. We started looking. There wasn't one. There were importers, there were resellers of cheap imports, there were the showroom-and-disappear operators. There wasn't a specialist that built for HK families and stayed accountable for what they built.
So we built it.
WALLBED KING 窩居·家 is a Hong Kong family-run furniture specialist. We design, build, install, and service every wall bed ourselves. We chose the American SBLM mechanism because after testing every option in the market, it was the only one that didn't make us nervous about a customer's bed eight years from now. In 2019 the manufacturer made us their sole Hong Kong distributor — that wasn't a marketing claim we bought, it was a relationship we earned by saying no to every job we couldn't do properly.
Here's what we will not do.
We won't ship a wall bed to a wall we haven't seen. We won't sell a kit and let you bolt it in yourself. We won't use a generic spring-and-cable mechanism, even if the price tag would let us look cheaper online. We won't run a "today only" countdown sale on a 20-year purchase. We won't take your deposit if your wall can't take a 750 kg load — even if you want us to. If a sofa bed is honestly the better choice for your situation, we will tell you, and we will lose the sale. That has happened more times than we can count, and we sleep better for it.
Here's what we promise.
When you message us on WhatsApp, you reach the people who will actually build your bed. Not a call centre, not a chatbot. The same humans, before the sale, during the sale, and on year nine of your warranty.
When we measure your flat, the measurement is free. The 3D mock-up of your design is free. There is no obligation to buy. No deposit changes hands until you have seen exactly what you would be paying for.
When we install, you get our team — trained on the SBLM mechanism, certified on structural-wall verification — for a single day, on-site, with the cabinet pre-built in our HK workshop. We handle the lift booking, the building-management noise hours, and the cleanup. You point at the wall; we handle everything between the point and the working bed.
When something breaks — and over a 10-year warranty, occasionally something does — we come back. Same team, same number, same WhatsApp thread we've been on since your first photo. We do not orphan customers.
One last thing.
We are not the cheapest wall bed in Hong Kong. We will never be. We will be honest about why — the mechanism costs what it costs, our team costs what it costs, the warranty reserve costs what it costs. We publish the breakdown on our pricing page because we want you to make the decision with full information, not with a sales pitch. If, after seeing the breakdown, the cheaper option is right for you, we respect that decision. If not — we'd be honoured to build your wall bed.
Hong Kong is the most expensive square foot in the world. We exist to give you a quarter of yours back, every single day, for as long as you live in your flat.

The 60-year arc
1965 → 2026 — the mechanism's heritage.
The bed in your flat is the latest expression of a 60-year engineering lineage. Here's the abbreviated timeline so you know exactly what you're buying into.
-
1965SBLM hinge mechanism patented in the United States
First-generation finger-lock mechanism designed for residential wall beds — solving the "spring-and-cable wears out" failure mode of earlier Murphy-bed era hardware.
-
1980s–2000sScaled to 26 countries
Mechanism iterated through 4 design generations · steel-stiffener reinforcement added · 750 kg dynamic load rating certified · global failure rate driven below 0.3% across a decade of installs.
-
2018WALLBED KING founded in Hong Kong
Family-run furniture specialist opens first Kwun Tong workshop after recognising HK's small-flat market was being underserved by importers + cheap imitations.
-
2019Sole Hong Kong distributor of the SBLM mechanism
Awarded by the manufacturer after passing a structural-install audit. Earned, not bought — and the relationship that defines the 10-year warranty pipeline today.
-
2023Hong Kong TV media features
Featured on 香港開講 + 壹 NEXT — among Hong Kong's most-watched lifestyle media. The broader public conversation about small-flat living shifted because of these segments.

Things we wish we'd known on day one
5 lessons from 8 years of installing wall beds in Hong Kong.
If we were starting today, knowing what we know now, here's what we'd do differently. Sharing publicly because it helps you ask better questions of any wall bed company — including ours.
"Always verify the wall before quoting. Always."
Early on, we quoted from photos. Twice we showed up to find drywall over plaster instead of concrete. We paid for the steel reinforcement out of our own margin. Now: no quote without an in-person wall check, even if the customer is in a hurry.
"Mattress thickness is the #1 thing customers forget to mention."
It's the question that should be asked on day one and almost never is. We've custom-machined three deeper frame boxes for customers we'd already quoted on the standard depth — that's our cost, not theirs. Now it's question 1 on our intake form.
"Telling a customer 'no' is often the highest-trust move you can make."
We've turned away jobs where the wall couldn't take the load, where the HKHA estate had alteration restrictions we couldn't work around, where a sofa bed was honestly the better answer. Every "no" we've said has resulted in a referral within 12 months. Customers remember being told the truth.
"The annual checkup is more for us than for the customer."
Going back to a 4-year-old install and seeing how it has actually held up is the only honest feedback loop we have. It's also where our 9/10 install-neatness score came from — we noticed an edge-banding pattern across multiple homes and changed our workshop process.
"Most customers don't want a wall bed. They want their floor back."
It took us two years to realise we're not in the wall bed business — we're in the "give-Hong-Kong-people-a-quarter-of-their-flat-back" business. Once we understood that, every conversation changed. We talk about square feet and life-friction now, not mechanisms.
